They contacted Alaska about a lost day of work (they were returning on a Sunday, had work on a Monday) and other inconveniences, and Alaska gave them a few hundred more in credit!

Definitely demand something. My older kid was on a flight from Chicago to Seattle…to Chicago because Alaska had a ground stop due to software issues. Because of timing, they couldn't get a hotel—they waited in line for hours overnight to get a decent rebooking.

I have never gotten to IPM—it's on my life list and it should not be hard to get there from Seattle! Thank you so much.

Exactly! Well, I had cancer 30 years ago and radiation therapy as part of it, so it is quite likely that—given my heart is otherwise very sound, it turns out—that the radiation caused very slight damage that has not added up. It's a tradeoff: I went into full remission, which is the great part!

Hi, folks, a little personal news. In mid-November, I'm getting my aortic valve replaced via open-heart surgery. As scary as that sounds, my prognosis is excellent. This is fairly personal health news, and I'm posting publicly for two reasons.

That is astonishing and I’m so happy they could get the procedures! I can’t imagine what that was like as a parent (much less the kids). Thank you for the advice!

I’ve heard that is an amazing event! (Thank you!)

Strangely, no! Via his editor, I sent questions and he answered them. The key was that I was asking him about his technique rather than his career choices.

I had to look that up—apparently they didn’t teach that to us in Hebrew school! Thank you very kindly.

Incredible! I love it. What a miracle in some ways it is to be alive today (or in the last few decades)!
