The Thanksgiving Food Drive is off to a great start. So far, 15,214 pounds have been donated, roughly the same as last year. Given how difficult a year this has been, it's amazing that Londoners always find a way to reach out . Thank you, London. The drive continues until October 13th.

The city councils of Mississauga, Toronto, Kingston, Brantford, Smiths Falls, Cochrane, Brockville, Chatham-Kent and Orillia have all declared a state of emergency regarding food insecurity in their communities. It's real. It's here. And it's robbing us of our future. Time to deal with it.

When a nation as wealthy as Canada permits children to go hungry, it is not just a policy failure but a moral alarm bell. The hunger of the young is the first sign that the social contract is fraying at its most sacred edge. In London, 1 out of 4 kids is now food insecure.

For 5 years, this dedicated group of volunteers have transformed the outside of the food bank. Now, as they harvest, it is a most beautiful thing. This is Volunteer Corner at its best, with great drone footage and a sense of what is possible in our community.

We all see it - the poverty, the hunger, joblessness and homelessness. Our task now is to stay focused until our nation works it's way through these problems. Change will come through exercising our citizenship by refusing to turn a blind eye. Don't ever doubt it.

I witnessed this multiple times yesterday and came away so inspired. Londoners are increasingly understanding the stakes of this moment and are digging deep to donate, volunteer, console, support, and ultimately to speak up. If only leadership could catch up to its citizens.
