A key focus of agroecological practice is understanding ecosystem functions.

Researchers are studying how plant-level treatments, field-level crop compositions & landscape-scale structures & vegetation interact to influence crop pest & disease risks.

But wider than this, it is a philosophy of human connectedness to nature, & at a political level, it challenges current economic agendas.

Therefore, to meaningfully & responsibly contribute to Africa’s agroecology transition, researchers need to think differently about agricultural research.

The paper highlights challenges associated with #RegenAg research incl:
- Short-term funding vs. long-term transitions (10+ years needed for many outcomes)
- Need for better metrics & scoring systems to benchmark regenerative progress
- Policy & industry engagement are essential to scale adoption
