This is yet another example of how journalism in Georgia has become an increasingly dangerous profession, as the Georgian Dream ruling party continues its crackdown on independent media.

In the wake of the investigation, IPI calls on Georgian authorities to immediately disclose which chemicals were used in breaking protests, and which therefore would have been used against journalists.

According to data recorded on the Mapping Media Freedom platform by IPI, during the protests in November and December 2024, at least 81 journalists were attacked. Dozens were targeted with water cannons laced with chemicals in what in many cases appeared to be a deliberate attack on journalists.

The investigation showed evidence that a World War I–era chemical agent was used by authorities to disperse anti-government protesters last year, which would likely have affected journalists covering the rallies.

The report provides recommendations of measures and policies necessary to address media capture in Slovakia and create a free, pluralistic and democratic media ecosystem, in line with EMFA provisions.

A second bill, nicknamed the “Al Jazeera Law,” would expand and make permanent a temporary order giving the Israeli government unilateral power to close foreign media outlets deemed to be threats to national security.

A new media regulation bill would require all news content providers to register with the government, and grant the government sweeping powers to cancel registrations or impose fines on media outlets for violations of the new regulations.
