no this is exactly it though!! i write fic (and prose/fiction in general) like this but in nonfiction or essays i am simply all over the place and rewrite multiple times

like fr i think the heaviest editing i've ever done of a fic has been for one or two chapters of consider this, which has a nonlinear narrative, where i've changed the position of entire flashback scenes in the chapter so it flows better

i love when i explain my writing process to friends and they're like "you're insane" because like, are we not all writing scenes in the order they occur, letting words pour onto the page borderline unedited and then cleaning it up a little bit for typos/repetition before posting immediately?

consider this chapter 13 writing is going veryyyy slowly but here's a snippet for wip wednesday, qian is nesting

Qian doesn't realise he's been hoarding clothes in his room until it's been three days, and the pile in the corner has started to encroach on the floor space next to the bed. He's not sleeping there, preferring Yuan's room, which smells like them, even if it means he has to sneak in late at night when Lili is home. Still, one morning he slips back into his room at dawn and trips over one of Yuan's hoodies. He picks it up off the floor, it's a worn one, fraying at the cuffs, that Yuan left behind before he even left for New York, but he's been wearing it recently around the house. It smells like him, like petrichor and frying onions, because he never bothers to take it off when he cooks, just rolls up the sleeves.

Qian puts the hoodie on the bed and turns to survey the rest of the clothes he's been absent mindedly collecting by aiming at the laundry basket and missing. The shirt Yuan wore on their date is still there, and he flushes at the memory of finding it in a wet heap in the corner the morning after. It's dry now, but the scent of rain still clings to it. That should go on the bed too, he decides.
