For good reason, historians do not refer to the Nazi-Soviet protocol of Aug. 24, 1939, as a German "peace plan." Also negotiated in secret, and named after Adolf Hitler's foreign minister, Joachim von Ribbentrop, and his Soviet counterpart, Vyacheslav Molotov, the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact - formally titled the Treaty of Non-Aggression between Germany and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics — cleared the way for the Third Reich to invade Poland, with Moscow's collaboration. The upshot is that the "peace plan" Trump ordered Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll to deliver to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was almost entirely a Russian concoction. If Zelenskyy didn't sign it by American Thanksgiving, Trump said, he'd be on his own and he could "fight his little heart out." When the bombshell disclosures made it clear that the Witkoff-Dmitriev pact contained mostly Putin's terms for Ukraine's surrender, European leaders demanded a halt to Trump's sabotage. The "peace plan" required Ukraine's total capitulation — a surrender of Crimea and great swathes of Eastern Ukraine to Russia, a subjugation of NATO to Russian demands for Ukraine's permanent exclusion, a massive reduction in the size of Ukraine's military, the prohibition of any NATO troops on Ukrainian soil, a U.S.-enforced pardon for Putin for all his war crimes, a return of Moscow to the G7, and a lifting of all sanctions on Russia.

Hamas surveilled the staff of foreign nonprofits in Gaza and designated local "guarantors" approved by the terrorist group to manipulate them, according to a report released on Wednesday. The report from the pro-Israel watchdog NGO Monitor showed how Hamas kept detailed notes on the staff of NGOs, or nongovernment organizations, in Gaza, including their finances, their family relationships, their piety level, and whether they were sympathetic or connected to the terror group. The report was based on internal Hamas documents from 2018 to 2022 — before the latest war in Gaza — which the IDF obtained in the Strip and declassified, NGO Monitor said.

Now, internal Shorouk documents reveal that the company was secretly owned by the intelligence services of former President Bashar Assad's regime. Even as the United Nations poured money into the firm, those intelligence services were engaged in a violent campaign to crush any opposition to Assad.

Lord Hughes of Ombersley, the chairman of an inquiry into the death of Dawn Sturgess, a mother of three, said Russian spies carried out an "astonishingly reckless act" when they took a highly toxic nerve agent into a busy city in a botched attempt to assassinate the double agent Sergei Skripal in March 2018. Sturgess died after coming into contact with a liquid in a sample bottle of Nina Ricci perfume laced with Novichok, a deadly nerve agent. The Russian spies had used the bottle to hold the toxin and they discarded it after targeting Skripal. It had been given to the 44-year-old by her boyfriend Charlie Rowley, who had found it discarded four months after the attack on Colonel Skripal, a former Russian military intelligence officer.

An existing bridge, the Jordan River Crossing, already connects the two sides of the proposed Jordan Gateway zone, near the Israeli city of Beit She'an. Matiash adds that while the immediate purpose of the bridge and the two zones is to promote cooperation between Israel and Jordan, the site also sits on a key node in the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, the US-backed vision to build a rail and shipping corridor linking those regions.

Why it matters: Wednesday's meeting marks the first direct talks between Israel and Lebanese civilians in decades, signaling a major step toward normalization negotiations between the two sides. Until now, the committee's periodic meetings involved only military officials, who largely avoided direct contact with each other. The committee, known as the International Monitoring and Implementation Mechanism, was established under the ceasefire reached Nov. 27, 2024, with the task of monitoring the truce and ensuring compliance with its terms. It is headed by the US and France — both of which helped broker the ceasefire — and is made up of UNIFIL, French and Lebanese representatives. One Jewish activist asked a protester why she was there, and the protester responded: "We are protesting in front of a site that holds genocide supporters, and they are trying to bring it to K-town." In other words, synagogues and the Jews inside them are fair game because Jews are "genocide supporters." Suddenly everyone's an "international law" enforcer. The Mamdani logic makes every Jew a valid target. I recently spent a week in Greece, and traveling to Jewish establishments in Europe is always eye-opening. The level of security required to, for example, eat in a kosher restaurant or pray in a synagogue is a reminder of Europe's dark past and the dark future many there seek to bring about. Mamdani is in the process of nudging New York City in that direction: Now, apparently, Jews seeking to worship in Gotham need a buffer zone. It should be noted that it is a violation of civil-rights law to prevent people from entering a house of worship. That is because such behavior is a direct assault on the First Amendment. Though Mamdani has exacerbated the problem, he did not create it. Even before his lies about "international law," the protest itself shattered civic norms. The result is a proposed law on top of a law. And that law might pass and it might make going to shul safer. But what kind of society needs such a law?

EU lawmakers called on the Commission many times to do what FATF was not able to. The Commission committed to complete a review by the end of 2025 to get their support to remove the United Arab Emirates and Gibraltar from the list earlier this year.

Israelis are looking forward, but that doesn't mean the recent past is forgotten. Quite the opposite: Here former hostages speak to reporters regularly to make clear the whole truth of the war and its toll. Nova festival survivors have banded together to heal as a community and to educate the rest of the country on what they have discovered about themselves in the process. Faces of Hamas's victims are still visible on walls and windows. The political and military echelons are daily facing calls for accountability, and steps in that direction have begun. But this is all in the service of looking forward. Israelis are deciding what shape their national future will take, who they will be as they emerge from their longest war. This country is always building, always clearing its own path ahead. You know who isn't moving on? Israel's enemies, specifically those who have made Gaza their personality. And I don't mean the people of Gaza, who are prevented from rebuilding by Hamas. I mean the Western politicians, activists, donors. and others who have nothing to motivate them to get out of bed in the morning without the hope of a Hamas resurgence and permanent war in Gaza. The best current example of this is the crackup of the British left. The Labour Party governs the country (for the moment) and yet is in a zombie-like state. Other parties to its left are gaining, and new parties are forming, none more perfectly Gaza-obsessed than former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn's party, named Your Party. (The name was a placeholder but is now official. The jokes tell themselves.)

The truth is the reverse: Netanyahu's disastrous misrule since his return to office has demonstrated why he should have stepped aside long ago if he truly cares about the national interest. That he refuses to do so, and instead demands that the system bend to his whims, suggests that his patriotic appeals are a pretense. Netanyahu presents himself as paying a price for Israel, but in actuality, Israel's people are paying the price for his unwillingness to cede power.

Anti-Semitism is a matryoshka doll of conspiracy theories, and conspiracy theories are famously resistant to facts that would otherwise undermine their animating assumptions. Jews should stand up for themselves because it's the right thing to do. Conspiracy theorists deserve no veto power. It is not the Jewish community's obligation to save anti-Semites from the consequences of their own actions.

The renaming of the park is not the problem per se here Kevin, it's rather the obsession of the media and political sphere and ours as society, spearheaded by the "Republicans", with Israel and the Jews, like nothing else is taking place in the whole wide world. The only way to explain it is to see Israel and the Jews, as a convenient scapegoat, to help us exonerate ourselves from all the nasty shit we did to our women, kids, the terrorism, our hate for the other, the Brit, the traveler, the immigrant, in other words anybody that doesn't fit our national imaginary. The Jew hatred unites the left, the right, and many more people in between, and help us process all things social and political, if there weren't any Jews or Israel, we will have been so desperate to manufacture them.

The reason there is a peace process is because there are actions that must be taken, building blocks put in position and in the right order. Ifa construction crew agrees to a time-bound path to a new apartment building but doesn't get all the walls finished by the deadline, does the building receive its certificate of occupancy anyway? This new State of Palestine sounds uninsurable. At the same time, the fact that we're even having this conversation is the fruit of a genuine diplomatic success: the Trump administration's triumph in getting the United Nations Security Council to vote to endorse his plan for the end of the war and the reconstruction of Gaza. Some of Netanyahu's coalition partners didn't like that the resolution on the plan mentioned a path toward a Palestinian state. But they should take the win: France and the United Kingdom voted to essentially annul their own previous recognition of a Palestinian state by signing on to a document that made clear no such state exists. There's something else that Trump's plan requires the parties to do: work. The president is not an especially patient man. Yet even he is not (so far, anyway) willing to put a sell-by date on his plan. The only way to complete it is to actually physically complete the rebuilding of Gaza, the disarming of Hamas and empowering of a non-Hamas governing entity, and the provision of security for the Gazan people until everything else is checked off the list. That is why other Mideast states are balking. The Israeli embassy in Dublin has been closed by Israel over the extreme anti-Israel policies of the Irish government. Israeli officials now call it, without fear of contradiction, the antisemitic capital of Europe. This is not about a park. It is about whether Ireland still believes its Jewish citizens belong. If Herzog's name does eventually fall, something larger falls with it; the claim that the Republic is an inclusive nation, rather than a monocultural tribe in progressive clothing. The Christian population of Israel is still growing, some years even as a percentage of the total population, and that is not the norm in the rest of the region. But this time of year, the issue tends to focus on one place more than others: Bethlehem. The answer to why the Christian population is struggling in this historical Christian city is the same, however, regarding the question of Christian struggles in the Palestinian territories. The Christian population of Gaza has plummeted since Hamas's 2007 takeover. The community's population in Bethlehem has deteriorated since the Palestinian Authority took control of the city in 1994. Hamas's activities both in Gaza and in places like Bethlehem (Hamas exists in the West Bank, as well) have made the Christian population unsafe and also forced into a second-class citizenship status. As Eness Elias notes, it has become increasingly difficult for Christians to buy land in places under Palestinian control. Elias also recounts a story in which "Sanaa Razi Nashash from Beit Jala described how she went to the police to file a complaint against a Muslim man who assaulted her-only to find the assailant wearing a police uniform." Chasing Christians out while preventing them from buying property is a pretty airtight strategy to ensure the population only goes one way: down. And it's the prevailing policy in places under Palestinian governance.
