I've spent a long time thinking of who could do that role in a modern day version of the show that is the one I think you aren't talking about, and my only answer is that everyone should have watched "Terriers" back in 2010.
I hope they get it right and it's not just "detective show with that name"

I’d probably read it several times and tell all my friends about it. Very very few artists have had the ability to absolutely blow me away, the depth of emotion that you captured with HACF was something that I’ve never experienced from any other work of art… so yeah, Hurry up and finish it.

Season 1 is the best version.
