Our 'Outside the Asylum' display is situated outside the museum's entrance doors. You can find out about some of the people who were admitted to the asylum, and view artefacts once hidden in our collection which help to give a better picture of their lives as patients. #HistPsych

This slip of paper by 'Dick' Tainton, Nurse at Powick Hospital, tells us how bandages were made in the linen room, torn from old bedding. The bandages aren't in our collection, but we do have a bandage rewinder from the former Worcester Royal Infirmary.

An update to the notes about the life of Henry Maiden. Our volunteers will not be beaten (!) and have gone over and above to find more about Henry's life, including his 'disappointment in love' and transfer between Derby and Powick asylums.

Our copy of Culpeper's Herbal contains beautiful coloured illustrations of plants like henbane and hemlock, both of which were used for anaesthetic qualities. Black henbane was known as witch's 'flying ointment'. #witchy #histmed #pharmhist

Dyk the BMA was founded in the Board Room at the Worcester Infirmary in 1832. Now home to @worcesteruni.bsky.social and The Infirmary Museum, you can still visit the board room as part of a tour. Charles Hastings is still on display in the overmantle.

Hi #MentalHealth #HistPsych experts...we need a little help y'all!

Any idea what the words are after 'Supposed Cause'. One of our volunteers looking into the people admitted to the asylum has transcribed it as 'P.A.F.P. Drink'. We can't see anything in Hack Tuke's Dictionary...

“Why should we fix our eyes on this spot only?” A little piece I wrote last month inspired by Edward Jenner’s response when asked about the impact of anti-vaccination activism about how the history of vaccination should give us hope in the face of current challenges.
"Why should we fix our eyes on this spot only?"
Recently I’ve been prone to thinking that things are looking bleak for vaccination, that wonder of science which is estimated to have saved 154 million lives since 1974.

Another busy day accessioning some of Mr. George Marshall's original collection. Many of these will have come from the dispensary at the Castle Street Infirmary, and one (the blue) was gifted to him by Surgeon Mr. Paul Houghton. The green has a replacement wooden lid.
