Annoys me that this group constantly blathers on about how everyone else is conspiracy-minded and living in la la land while they engage in a fantasy of building a mass movement of technocrats whose charts and graphs will be so persuasive that the masses get into the streets to topple fascism

There isn't even a single song on here from They Might Be Giants' 1990 release "Flood" - surely this can't be right.

Are the data comparable at this point? Waymo is mostly limited to ‘good’ conditions (temperate climates and low speed city driving). Not opposed to it but expect that its safety profile will degrade as it’s rolled over to other environments and will look less like a miracle.

Also, as bad as losing a job is, it’s a discrete event whereas inflation has the potential to go up with no obvious stopping point which triggers a greater fear response for many

Though the thing about Reddit being a walled gardens is that if you don’t participate in the worst subreddits it’s possible to never see that content which is untrue of almost almost every other social site

Also we are hyperfocused on measuring economic conditions and not other societal conditions so it’s not surprising to me that people are channeling their panic at those degrading societal conditions into economic woe (not to say there aren’t also true economic woes)

At my old workplace there was once a chicken-wing eating contest and one contestant was going so slowly that a coworker shouted out scornfully, “He’s just eating lunch.”

This is why we had Andy Rooney. We need a national curmudgeon to channel our petty annoyances into otherwise we end up like this.

Agree but would say that what and how we measure is never purely objective, we communicate our values through those decisions. When we allow measurement to diverge greatly with people’s experiences the takeaway for many is that we’re out-of-touch, that we care more for numbers and rules than people

Good thing I didn’t say that because I agree with you that vibes-only would be bad. Is it your contention that we shouldn’t ever change the FPL? I would guess not, so to restate the Q: is ever changing it for political reasons acceptable?
