since becoming a parent I've been dismayed to learn there is a large category of children's books made to imply the parents have good politics or taste or something totally illegible to children, and also the books fucking suck

Yeah I think he's wrong about this. Device turnover is key for the system functioning. If all our bikes are doing 8 hour long leisurely rides on the Mall it's not much of a transit system. Higher trips per device per day = higher VMT reduction
