The older I get, the more my politics mature from childish, naïve beliefs like "the world is complicated and leaders have to make hard decisions" to more serious, adult principles like "hurting people is bad and helping people is good."

When I was 8 or 9 my family lived in Las Vegas. The dirt is arid and cracked like it's a plate dropped from the sky that shattered when it hit the earth. But if you touch it or break it apart it is chalk-fine, it gets into everything, your clothes, your hair, your lungs. 1/16

Years ago someone posted this and it's a #goodreminder that's always stuck with me, to the point it's become part of the fabric of my life:

"If the world is gonna beat your ass anyway you might as well stand up for your beliefs and make the tears meaningful."

#SNAP day 11 fun fact (I know, I missed a day): Oregon public service workers were all hands on deck and worked through the night when the judge ordered funding by Friday to make sure that the people of Oregon would be sure to eat in November.

THREAD. One important chapter in my Copaganda book describes how a small group of pro-police professors corrupted the field of criminology. Somehow, I've been invited to speak at the 2025 American Society of Criminology annual conference this week. Should be interesting...

The problem with "we have no choice but to do this thing Trump and the GOP want because otherwise the government stays shut down" is that there's no limiting principle.

Casual reminder that the myth of “pulling yourself up by your bootstraps” is a cruel hoax designed to convince poor people from all walks of life that the injustices they face are a result of their own actions, rather than an oppressive system rigged against them.

Let's talk about #trade. No, not import, export, deficits, or overproduction. I'm talking ceiling fans, pens, cigarettes, trinkets, and food. I'm talking time, and service, and reputation. This is all trade I've been offered or participated in as a volunteer or worker in social services. 1/10

#SNAP day 9 BONUS fun fact: there have been concerns regarding rumors that benefits in OR that have already been paid will be removed. Oregon Department of Human Services have confirmed that this is NOT the case.

#SNAP day 9 fun fact: benefits reduce adverse health outcomes for mothers and infants, reducing load on the healthcare system and associated costs. Without food benefits NICU stays and mother hospitalizations after birth increase, as does childhood anemia.

#Transgendered people don't owe you passability. If you "need" to not know someone is trans in order to treat them as a human worthy of respect, your "respect" is just play-acting regardless of who you show it to. I say this with kindness: look inward, do better.

My friend was 86 years old, not in the best health (who would be?) but not terrible. He died last week. Just… sat down, said he didn't feel very good, and died. Quiet, peaceful, at home. His husband of 50 years laid next him and held his hand for six hours, just acknowledging that he was gone. 1/7

#SNAP day 8 fun fact: a judge ordered full SNAP payments be released by Friday - just for November. The gov found a judge to block the order immediately. Just to keep some of the most vulnerable of our society from eating for ONE month. People are gonna die. And this is a game to them.

No #SNAP day 6 fun fact: a single month of delayed SNAP benefits results in billions in lost economic activity nationwide. In low-income rural communities with only one or two grocery stores the impact can be a local recession.

Getting an oil change, I exchange pleasantries with the tech and when I ask how he is he says: "well, I have a door identifying as a window today, so it's stuck shut."

Me: well, as long as the window's happy, who really cares?

Tech: that's true, we decorated it with balloons for Dornbecher's!
