I'm also curious how much of that number is, like bibles and instructional literature vs books the way most of use think of reading for fun.

3) Some people don't read books, some people read lots of books, but unlike in the past, the people not reading have more time to use social media to share the fact they aren't reading, which creates the perception that nobody is reading.

2) Schools have spend 25 years shifting away from long form literary analysis to focus on test scores, plus the whole phonics debacle, plus COVID lockdowns messed up schooling means education looks really different that it did when we were in school.

My 2 cents: People who read are reading lots, but there's a public perception issue because 1) women drive popular book buying (just like they drive gaming) but people don't consider it "real reading" just like they don't consider candy crush "real gaming" and...
