Etna, December 24-27, 2025: The Northeast Crater's Great Return December 28, 2025 by Boris Behncke For several decades, the Northeast Crater , the oldest of Etna's four summit craters, seemed like a grumpy old man. In its youth, it had put on quite a show, but by then it was limited to rather modest activity, normally confined to its large and deep internal pit. At Christmas 2025, however, it returned to make its presence felt with lava fountains and eruption columns laden with ash and lapilli, almost 28 years after its last paroxysmal episode. It all started on December 24, when the monitoring network of the INGV-Osservatorio Etneo in Catania showed a marked change in the monitored signals, namely volcanic tremor (Figure 1), ground deformations, and infrasonic activity.

At the moment (!), one could describe the tremor as decreasing – a slow reduction in pressure might be happening – but we know Etna.
The INGV, OE, announces that with improved visibility, it is now possible to see the entire eruptive area. At 6:48 PM, a series of strong explosions began at the NE Crater, projecting coarse pyroclastic material across the entire cone & well beyond its base. At the time of this statement, sporadic Strombolian explosions, some very strong, are occurring at the NE Crater. Meanwhile, activity has intensified at the vent located on the upper flank of the Voragine crater, which is currently producing a constant fountain several dozen meters high. The lava flow emitted from a vent at the E base of the Voragine reported in the 11:36 AM statement is still being fed; Satellite images taken this morning showed that it had traveled ~ 1.8 km eastward, toward the Valle del Bove. The average amplitude of the volcanic tremor, after the rapid decrease reported in the previous press release, stabilized, albeit at high values, until ~ 18:45 UTC, when a new sudden increase occurred that lasted until ~ 19:15 UTC. Subsequently, the amplitude returned to values ​​comparable to those observed before this last brief event. The location of the centroid of the volcanic tremor sources is currently unavailable for technical reasons. The last location available at 17:00 UTC showed the centroid remaining in an area slightly NW of the NE Crater at an elevation of ~ 2800–3000 m AMSL. Infrasonic events, after a temporal decrease associated with the reduction in volcanic tremor amplitude, began at ~ 18:48 UTC & returned to very high frequency values ​​until ~ 18:10 UTC, with associated amplitudes in some cases very high. The events continue to be located primarily at the NE Crater &, to a lesser extent, at the Bocca Nuova. Analysis of ground deformation data shows no significant changes since the last release in any of the sensor networks. The clinometer network also shows substantial stability at the ECP summit clinometer since ~ 16:30. The DRUV dilatometer has also been stable since the same time.

1/2 ETNA STATEMENT 2025/12/27 16:28 (15:28 UTC) The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, Etnean Observatory, reports that after a few hours of relative calm, a new lava fountaining episode began at the Northeast Crater at 2:15 PM UTC. Activity increased rapidly, producing lava jets 300-400 meters high and an eruption column laden with pyroclastic material, which rose several kilometers above the summit of Etna and was then pushed westward by the wind. At 2:45 PM, activity began to decrease, and the fountaining transitioned to strong explosions with lava bubbles, which ejected coarse pyroclastic material to the base of the cone and beyond. At the time of this statement, intermittent ash emission persists. Compared to the morning's fountaining episode, this one was more energetic, with taller fountains and a denser eruption column. 1/2 ETNA STATEMENT 2025/12/27 11:36 (10:36 UTC) The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, Etnean Observatory, reports that eruptive activity at Etna's summit craters has further intensified over the past 24 hours. Strombolian activity continued at the Northeast Crater, with almost continuous explosions. During the night, visibility was severely limited due to dense cloud cover; however, the clouds were constantly illuminated by strong flashes. Around 09:00 UTC, with partially improved visibility, a rapid increase in the intensity of activity was observed, with lava fountains approximately 150-200 m high and continuous ash emissions. At 09:50 UTC, activity at the Northeast Crater decreased again with sporadic ash emissions. Starting around 6:00 AM, non-INGV webcam images showed ash and steam emissions from an area on the eastern side of the summit, where a lava flow had begun and is moving toward the upper Valle del Bove. As visibility improved, it was possible to observe a vent opening on the upper eastern flank of the Voragine crater, with sporadic ash emissions, from which the lava flow appears to have originated. Persistent cloud cover on Etna's eastern flank precludes observation of the extent of this lava flow; INGV-OE personnel are currently inspecting the site to obtain more detailed information. Since the morning of yesterday, December 26, frequent ash emissions have also occurred from vent BN-2 of the Bocca Nuova crater. Activity in the summit craters is producing an eruptive column several kilometers high, mostly consisting of white steam, which is moving toward the west-southwest. No ash fallout has been reported in populated areas at this time. The average amplitude of volcanic tremor continued the increasing trend reported in the previous press release, reaching very high values ​​around 12:00 UTC yesterday. 2/2 Although fluctuating, the amplitude of volcanic tremor remained virtually stationary at this level until ~ 05:00 UTC this morning, when it showed a sudden increase, peaking at ~ 05:50 UTC, followed by an equally rapid decrease. Analysis of ground deformation data highlights deformations visible on the clinometer networks and the DRUV dilatometer. On the latter, a decrease of approximately 110 nanostrains is evident from 8:30 UTC to 9:40 UTC, when the trend appears to reverse again. A signal associated with deflation of the crater area is visible on the summit clinometers; it is also faintly visible on the intermediate-level sensors. In particular, at the ECP summit clinometer, two phases of deformation are visible: the first shows a deformation of approximately 5 microradians from 16:30 UTC to approximately 21:00 UTC, the second variation amounts to approximately 3.5 microradians from 9:00 UTC to 10:00 UTC. No deformation is detectable by the high-frequency GNSS network outside of instrumental noise.

Partial cloud cover prevents detailed observation of the activity; however, a non-INGV camera showed incandescent material ejected above the crater rim around 18:10 UTC. The activity is producing a dense steam plume, without evidence of volcanic ash, which is being blown by the ENE wind. From a seismic perspective, the average amplitude of the volcanic tremor is in the high range, a level it reached on December 24th at approximately 12:00 UTC and where it remains fairly stable. The centroid of the volcanic tremor sources is located in the Northeast Crater area at an elevation of 2800-2900 m above sea level. Infrasonic events occur very frequently, with increasing amplitudes, and are primarily located in the Northeast Crater and, to a lesser extent, in the Bocca Nuova. The onset of infrasonic tremor was observed starting around 21:50 UTC. Analysis of ground deformation network data shows a positive variation of approximately 80 nanostrains at the DRUV dilatometer starting on the morning of December 24th. Also, since the morning of December 24th, the ECP clinometer has shown a variation of over 1.5 microradians. The GNSS network shows no significant variations.
