I think you've got the right of it here. Though he walked it back in a book released years later, during one of the debates Romney played into the Birtherism myth and implied Obama wasn't really an American citizen.

Seemed to say "Neoliberalism is workable so long as you obfuscate and all but lie to the public." Destroying that myth could have forced the Democrats to become economic populists, a far more winning message nowadays (not to mention healthier for the nation).

I sort of agree here, but more because Romney's victory would have dispelled the myth overtaking the Democrats that you don't need to offer anything as long as your candidate is sufficiently charismatic (the Electability Delusion). Obama's victory after getting little done
