If I recall, Lower Decks had also independently arrived at the idea of using Riker and the Titan in their latest script, so it made double sense to tighten anyway.

I wouldn’t say “original”, but it was something we were toying with at the time as a way to get more of the other Trek series in there — with the Titan pursuing them relentlessly while the real Janeway caught wind of it and came later.

Utimately simplicity prevailed.
