(the latter option, though more logistically complicated, would potentially lower cost-per-covered individual for the union and the co-op by increasing the size of the pool of covered workers)

sure! some unions have existing healthcare plans that employers can pay into (I believe CWA has one, for example), but another version of this model i’ve read about is adding co-op employees to the union’s staff healthcare plans, with the co-op reimbursing the union for the cost of the premiums.

i firmly believe the futures of journalism unions and worker-owned media companies are with each other, and building bridges between these types of worker organization is vital for both of their long term survival

in exchange, the existing unions would find a new base of dues-paying members who are more likely to be pro-worker and pro-union. it’s a win-win in the truest sense, lower costs for co-ops, better services for members, a broader coalition for workers

my understanding is that these costs are some of the bigger hurdles to bringing co-op workers on full time. this seems like a place where traditional unions — with access to union health insurance and pensions — could step in to facilitate this new model of worker power in journalism and media

not only does this stymy and silence the journalist as long as they’re on staff, but it saves the network money in two key ways: good reporting is expensive, and when an employee voluntarily leaves, they receive no severance.
