Books and comics, Doctor Who, some political stuff (sorry). he/him
I did a Pitch Perfect/Breakfast Club double feature on New Year's Day. PP2 is not as good as the first one. Started my 2026 Criterion Challenge with Yi Yi, a perfect movie. I liked Marty Supreme a lot more before I heard Josh Safdie's thoughts on the ending.

The Gate of the Feral Gods by Matt Dinniman

Carl and Donut enter a level that never made any sense to me. Bowls or spheres or something. Two kinds of gods? Also a gate. This episode is so plot dense you really have to just hang on and go with it. That said, its a great series and I love it.

I think that's it for 2025. Stand outs include One Day, Everyone Will Have Been Against This, 2666, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, The Devils, Mystic River, The Tainted Cup & A Drop of Corruption, The Heart in Winter, and both of the Donal Ryan books I read. More books in 2026!

A Case of Life and Limb by Sally Smith

Gabriel Ward returns to defend the good name of a music hall star and to find out who is sending body parts to his colleagues. Also, why? And who's body are they coming from anyway? I'm glad I found this series. The first 2 books have been a good time.

Stone Yard Devotional by Charlotte Wood

A woman takes refuge with a community of nuns following her divorce and considers questions of guilt, loneliness, and forgiveness. There's also a plague of mice. This is a lovely, thoughtful novel. Maybe I should have given it five stars.

Decided on a whim to rewatch Vervoids, a pleasantly mid Doctor Who from 1987. The Muppets is a favorite, of course. Girl on IRT was good. Great soundtrack. Turn it Around is a long doc about East Bay Punk, thru rather rose-colored glasses. #lastfourwatched #bandcampfriday

Usagi Yojimbo vol. 1-12 by Stan Sakai

I've been working my way thru Usagi Yojimbo this year. It starts with a clear TMNT influence, but the series quickly becomes more beautiful and more assured, eventually becoming one of the most singular comics ever published. Very recommended.
