That’s fair. It feels to me that this season wasn’t “table setting” per se, but more we’re watching Ellie be willing to lose her humanity for the sake of vengeance and perpetuating the cycle of violence. Jumping between Abby and Ellie would have been worse IMO

And slowly sacrificing her ideals in the pursuit of “justice”. We’re watching the cycle of violence continue, and our main character we cheered on turn into the same monster that took Joel. Ellie and Abby are mirrors of one another, which is why that final shot was so powerful.

It’s almost like it’s based on a game and is doing a fairly good job being a faithful adaptation. Considering what’s coming, this season did exactly what it needed to.
