In a secluded part of St Mary’s, Calne, behind a beautiful art nouveau curtain, is this cross; the original grave marker to Lord Charles Mercer-Nairne.
For me it’s the staining on the base of the cross, the earth in which he is buried, that is so impacting about these returned crosses. #ww1 #memory
