From what I've read (reputable sources; I believe the NYTimes (okay, marginally reputable) has an analysis of videos), and Heather Cox Richardson agrees, he had a license to carry, had a gun, DID NOT brandish it; they took it from his back waistband. heathercoxrichardson.substack.com/p/january-24...

This morning, on a street in Minneapolis, at least seven federal agents tackled and then shot and killed Alex Jeffrey Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse for the local VA hospital.

Me too. Writing since I was a pre-teen ... degree in writing ... FINALLY WRITING! (many decades later)

Purity politics = losing politics. Hold your nose and vote for the best choice, even if they aren't perfect.

Spoiler alert: NO ONE is perfect.

In MARCH in some areas.

Down-ballot matters a VERY LOT. Pay attention to elections for prosecutors and judges.

I'll be darned. Why have I always thought that pine martens were birds?!

"I was today years old..."

Wow. A mainstream publication actually writing a semi-accurate headline!
January 21, 2026 at 7:29 PM
Oh, this is the perfect meme. For those of us who are old enough, anyway.

Fabulous.

I so want a Maine Coon, and I am so against buying from breeders, and I've never encountered one in a rescue. (I'm sure they're there, it's just that the CDS hasn't led me to one yet.)

I keep thinking I need to aim for 200-300K. I must be out of my mind.

Currently at 30,000 and stuck. Oy.

This is actually very helpful. I've been stuck in a tension-lacking problem in a book I'm working on right now and you've given me a new perspective on fixing it. Thank you!

So sorry - and sad - that you're having to deal with this, and good for you for putting it out there.

Yeah. They tell us when it's time, as hard as that is. And for me, the joy they bring in their all-too-short lives is worth the pain, especially knowing that they had good lives (all 9 for cats!) with me. And it's still brutal.

And the chances of any *reputable* prosecutor charging James are vanishingly small... and any other type of prosecutor (!) has seen what happens, so ... Of course, one should never underestimate the power of stupidity.

I have that same memory, but I was one year older...

Dr. Zachary Rubin's Substack article this morning outlined very unfortunate (to say the least) updates to the CDC's Autism page. Ugh.

The CDC’s Autism Page Shows Something Is Very Wrong Inside the Agency
Something is deeply broken inside the CDC, and the agency’s newly revised autism and vaccine page is the clearest evidence yet.

I find myself in "edit mode" when reading... it is, I think, one of the perils of being a writer. "Oh, why did they do that? Oh, that word should be deleted." And so on.
November 18, 2025 at 2:33 PM
Well, *that's* wildly helpful.

(not...)
🙄

There are good quotes about that.

"Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." Arthur C. Clarke

"Science is magic that works." Kurt Vonnegut

Yup.
