the lore
i've mentioned that i got edits back on the gnome book, and my editor had some pretty significant notes about the spec bio elements of gnomes. suffice to say a lot of it didn't make sense beyond "wouldn't that be funny and/or fucked up" and needed some tweaking to the evolutionary logic. so i've taken the time to make it a little less fucked up but (ideally) no less interesting. and still a little funny. and now there's Even More Gnome Shapes to love and enjoy. gnomes have Four Roles. sister, auntie, mummy, and papa. there's also pups but pups aren't really people yet. sisters are gnomes who scavenge and do outdoors work. your sex is irrelevant, even if you're male you're considered a sister...until your neck ruff starts to darken, which indicates male puberty. males are then given the choice between castration, which transitions them socially to auntie and prevents them from entering rut, or preparing to become a papa and leaving the nest forever to find a mate. if you're a female sister, you'll spend a longer portion of your life being little and infertile, but if you survive long enough or there's a power imbalance, you might grow into an auntie. aunties remain in the nest and don't go outside. they fill the role of defensive soldiers and nursemaids, being able to lactate and care for young, but they don't give birth themselves. only the mummy gives birth to pups. an auntie can become a mummy in certain circumstances, but for the most part her pheromones keep them non-breeding. gnomes! this is all for urban gnomes specifically. Who Knows how much this affects the lore of the other types, since i wrote all that about an hour before getting notes and they don't matter to this specific book, lmao.
