Yesterday we were exactly halfway through the year — 182 days on either side of July 2. I’ve never noted this moment when the teeter-totter is perfectly parallel to the pavement. There’s something satisfying about having as much road behind you as you have before you.

“How much longer will the greed of a few be allowed to marginalize the many and put life and our planet at risk or in peril of destruction?” a professor of molecular genetics asked.

To celebrate the official start of the 2025 baseball season in Taiwan, I post the first of 4 essays about the history of the sport in Taiwan— an origin story that invested “Taiwan’s favorite game” with an ongoing spirit of resistance to oppression.

A new blog post to celebrate today, the ancient Roman holiday of Feralia. Well, really it’s a contemplation of February as a month of “transformation,” rich with tricksters and werewolves.

The irony of the richest man in the world almost single-handedly destroying an agency designed to help the world’s poor, so that the U.S. federal budget has more room for another giant tax cut for the richest man in the world and his pals, should not be lost on anyone. [Cartoon by Mike Luckovich]

The smaller, disruptive side of this sabotage manual is a guide to poor management: how to underperform. I have mixed feelings about this. Keeping it for a longer blog essay.

Godzilla Minus One” will FINALLY be shown in a cinema in Taiwan, possibly the first Asian nation outside of Japan to screen it. I don’t know if the film was made for IMAX screens, but I’d love to see it again in this format. The soundtrack alone is worth going to the cinema for.

Hey folks, as we move on in 2025, Ginger Nuts of Horror is looking for new reviewers to join the family.

This year was a wipeout for me with the lead-up to my surgery and recovery.

I'm looking to hit the ground running and reclaim GNoH as the home of horror.

Doing some research about “The Night Gallery” I happened upon a reminder about the 1972 TV show “The Sixth Sense.” As a kid I was intrigued by each episode of the short-lived series. You reckon “Supernatural” was an inheritor of this paranormal monster of the week concept?

I often sit on the patio to watch the birds. Today the birds showed up to just watch me. “How’s it feel?” they ask. “Creepy, right?” Ummm, I’ll go back inside. You birds have a nice day.

@thehauntologist.bsky.social “The Evolution of Horror” podcast might be a notable addition to the online “Horror Studies Resources” list. It is not an academic podcast, but it stands above the many genre-focused podcasts for its intelligent and mature approach to film study.

Which trailer will end the year with the most hype: Superman or 28 Years Later? I’m talking about trailers and online excitement (all that babblesharing).

In Victorian England the Christmas season drew forth a slew of ghost stories. Over the past few decades our Horror cinema is turning Christmas into a Season of the Slasher, while running along Santa’s slay is the action figure makeover. Why do you think we are embracing both of these genre styles?

Saw this documentary in the local cinema this morning. It is really strong stuff about single parents and lonely people trying to cope with the extra expectations and stresses that accompany the holiday season.

Here's an excerpt from my forthcoming novel DEATH OF THE AUTHOR here (January 2025).

This chapter flashes its scifi side, but *please* understand this book...stretches. When you start the novel (this excerpt is chapter 3, not 1), you'll see what I'm talking about, 😁. reactormag.com/excerpts-dea...
