David Lean’s Summertime asks us to believe Katharine Hepburn as a shy, anxious, lovelorn spinster on an Italian vacation. Marginally successful. The light does a lot of the work. Olivia de Havilland made The Heiress six years prior; was she unavail? Or did she just hate Italians? We’ll never know.
