The midwinter solstice was celebrated with misrule on Sunday 21 December as thousands came together in Penzance to ‘turn the world upside down’ and saw fire, beasts and masked revellers aplenty

Maeshowe is a chambered tomb situated in the Orkney Islands. Its entrance is directly in line with the Barnhouse megalith when illuminated by the sun at winter solstice.
