Liked seeing Carly next to Poly. Great sax in both songs.

I love The World is Mine as well.

Bakune has small but passionate cult following here in the US.

Definite similarities in the characters of Mon/Bakune, in the eccentric police chiefs, the violence, and the unexpected spiritual aspect towards the end. I think you will like it.

Young Sunday had so many outrageous series in the 90s: Inu, Moonlight Whispers, Bakune Young, Ichi of course, Minus (the one with the teacher-protagonist cooking and eating a dead student).

A shame it lost its way in the 00s and was cancelled.

Actually from The New Comics ed. Bob Callahan. Book was hated by lot of contributors because pages were printed out of order, too dark, etc. Still a good sampler of alt-comics circa 1990. 1st Maruo in English?

CUJ had everyone’s favorite – Gen. MacArthur getting his head lopped off.

I want to read his autobiography. The cover of the last volume is nuts, showing him collapsed on the floor with blood pouring from his mouth surrounded by his manuscript... and he's still doing wild drawings at age 70.

"Michael Stipe’s sexy mumbles and crisply stated gnomicisms got scrubbed away like he was the victim of a zealous restorer of quattrocento paintings", what a line!

Love the choice for #1. Indeed, I haven't seen it on other lists. even those where I might expect it.
Now I want to read Steve Voce but have no doubt I will regret it, or at least end up pointlessly agitated by his opinions.

The version with “Dreams” playing over the Best Shot Ever is the original, isn't it? That was the version I first saw on the bootleg VHS I bought in Boston Chinatown back in 1994. I thought it was changed when it had its US release.

He looks like the Procul Harum guy.

Add a Danton descendent for a frenemy relationship with Robespierre and I would certainly read this.

Ah, Xgau and his “primeval suspicion of Europeans who presume to "improve" on rock and roll”. Surprised he didn’t use Yurrupeans. He recanted a teensy bit later on? His Shonen Knife/Pizzicato Five reviews are worst of 90s though: not wrong (I agree with the basic criticisms) but quite obnoxious.

Same dynamic happened in early 00s when there was an exodus for similar reasons (racist etc. trolls) from Usenet to message boards, Yahoo groups etc. Some trolls spent months “spying” on posters at the new platforms and breathlessly reporting back, which even other trolls admitted was pathetic.

I remember first reading about it in Mystery Train. It lived up to Marcus' description. Most of the contemporary reviews were pretty damn hostile (which I can understand - it's more frightening than many horror movies).

In addition to Minetaro Mochizuki and Seiki Tsuchida as influences (both touched on in the MangaBrog interview) he has expressed admiration for Yoshikazu Ebisu. For younger artists, he has cited Tsuchika Nishimura, Keigo Shinzo, and Miyazaki Natsujikei.

Came to this discussion late, but fwiw Dirk Deppey has repeatedly stated (on here no less) that he used the scanslation of Nijigahara Holograph that Mangascreener did to convince Gary Groth to publish it.

Kanakko was one of my favorites when I used to read Ax (before I burned out on that anthology). I should get the books. Your rave for FSS may finally push me to give it a try. Wish I had bought the English editions when I saw them in stores years ago.

A few pages later, and we are introduced to our heroine - running late to school while eating toast! (don't ask me what's going on with her mom and the chicks in the last panel).
