you could host a forum on a server in your closet. you had direct control over the data. with discord and facebook every thing we do on those platforms gets stored away with them, to do whatever they like with.

ok fake theory, they pushed us away from user moderated forum communities to social media bc then all the traffic has a central mediator that it has to go between, thus giving less walls between u and the data. the gov just has to ask FB or discord for data and theyll get it.
