The way I see it; the era of Native Americans marking trees would be beyond the age of that tree and just about any tree east of the Rockies. But that doesn’t mean it wasn’t intentional and a trail marker for someone. Just my opinion…I love trees and the more interesting the better!

Have you read the novel Barkskins by Annie Proulx? It tells the story of how intense deforestation from the 1600s onwards affected North America, its peoples, and the old growth forests, including the area of UP Michigan. It's eye-opening and heartbreaking.
