I was in socal until 85, and never heard her on top 40 stations. then I moved to small town in nv, and what others have said about urban/rural divide is true: lot of stuff didn't make it to us. there was no cable provider for our town until the 90s! you had to have $ to afford HUGE satellite dish

in the US, didn't have mtv until the 90s and never heard her on the radio, so my introduction to her was on don't give up (which I also first heard in the 90s). but I know she was quite popular in the UK from the beginning. I don't imagine you get on top of the pops by being obscure
