By way of introduction (this is who I am and what I do), let me tell you about something I got up to this summer. May Sinclair has an archive at Penn, but some papers were recently donated to Sussex. They were a mess! Nibbled by mice and In all kinds of order maysinclairsociety.com/2024/09/26/m...
May Sinclair Papers at the University of Sussex
The papers at The Keep, University of Sussex were unsorted and impossible to use in any meaningful sense. They have now been sorted, catalogued, and are available for researchers. You can view the …

As more of my valued colleagues face the threat of redundancy, here’s a quick reminder that it takes years and years of public investment to train an academic. Cutting someone with this wealth of experience loose isn’t “saving” anything. It is a massive waste of our collective resources.
UK Universities in Crisis? Time to Transform Higher Ed Finance
by Rob Hawkes and Scott Ferguson Universities in the UK are in crisis. Job cuts in the sector are reaching ‘cataclysmic’ levels, with an estimated 10,000 already lost and many more at risk. Just da…

This is both an incredibly niche thing but I think it should be more of a thing. Caffè Nero subscribes to the British Newspaper Archive so it’s all free on their wifi. There. I said it.

Interesting, I don’t know it. But I am now interested because although I vaguely remember reference to bi modernists it’s always peripheral (and isn’t that interesting in itself)

Hmmm. I don’t know, but if it were me I would look at what has been written about H.D. and then possibly think about bi-erasure. Eg No Modernism Without Lesbians? Which I haven’t read yet, disclaimer, it is on my shelf.

I had a bit too much wine last night and tried to write a poem about AI. Needless to say not much looks coherent today but I liked:

You wanted to climb this mountain
But then
They told you the mountain had been climbed
And you, you were only allowed to look up at it
From the base.

The modernist magazines book makes for a good cushion, I’ve always thought so

I came in here to say this 😂

Carbonel!! I loved that book.

That’s interesting. He attended Gandhi when he was ill in London so perhaps a sense of indebtedness or personal fondness!

Yes indeed, Thomas Allinson makes a strong appearance. There’s a tenuous connection I intend to draw between Thom > his son Adrian > Adrian’s friend Dorothy Richardson > Richardson’s crank views on brown bread & consumption

I think the tone of the original post intends to refer to mass-produced sliced white though, not homebaked or bakery yeasted bread! The discourse today is amusing as I have a chapter to write about bread for my Modernist Wellness book …!

I saw a job posting for a heritage project focused on Romany history. I wasn't sure how visible it would be so wanted to share so that the job gets seen by the people whose history it is focusing on.

Give it a share, perhaps?

It’s mad, innit. My lower back pain is insane if I stand for a few hours, but I can walk for 2x or 3x that and be fine.

She thrives in work and makes more money than he ever did; he is a natural homemaker and parent and is happier.

I just finished reading The Home-Maker by Dorothy Canfield Fisher, which has a very energetic type A woman stuck doing housework and getting angry/her relaxed and dreamy husband working in accounts for a dept store and losing his soul. There’s a dramatic incident and they swap roles (kind of).
