then suddenly there's exponential growth of the public square via social media but without the civil society, accountability, or literacy/critical thinking that had once been there. All you have left is a big morass of people without a lot in common, and not much to do but yell at each other. Maybe!

I think this is dead on, but why? I wonder if it has to do with 1940-80s(?) as a decrease of wealth inequality and increase of literacy & civil society. Civil society goes first w/suburbanization & repression of CRA/ERA, then class stratifies making ppl more susceptible of idea-silo-ing...
