♻️ Cherwell District Council in the UK is switching its bin lorries from diesel to Italian vegetable oil biofuel (HVO), cutting 600–700 tonnes of CO₂/year! Slightly pricier than diesel, it’s a greener short-term solution until electric HGVs are viable.

When a whale dies its corpse sinks & becomes a deep-sea haven: scavengers, worms & microbes colonise the body, & over decades it turns into a vibrant “underwater city.” These whale fall ecosystems support rare species, recycle nutrients & play a crucial role in ocean health.

EU lawmakers have voted to slash corporate sustainability rules. Only the biggest companies now need to report on climate impact; due diligence duties are cut & climate transition plans are no longer mandatory. With 382 MEPs in favor & 249 opposed we can't even console oursleves that it was close. 😢

A study found that from 2014–2024, US asthma & COPD inhalers produced ~24.9M metric tons of CO2e, equal to emissions from 530,000 gas-powered cars per year. Nearly 98% of the CO2e was from metered-dose inhalers with hydrofluoroalkane propellants while dry-powder & soft-mist options emitted far less.

Apple is heavily leaning into renewables with 650 MW of planned new solar & wind capacity in Europe. They seem genuine in the goal to be carbon neutral by 2030 - incl. emissions from product use, 29% of its carbon footprint.

Apple's new projects will generate >1million MWh of clean energy by 2030!

Fri-YAY Good News!

The U.S. is tackling climate change by turning plant waste into #biochar, a carbon-rich material that locks CO₂ away for decades! Applied Carbon’s on-site tech makes this process efficient & low-cost. Smart carbon management for a healthier planet!

The EU is under pressure: Qatar & the US have sent a joint open letter urging the bloc to rethink its Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD).

They warn the rule could undermine the reliability/affordability of energy supplies, esp gas, risking the EU’s industrial competitiveness.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has postponed finalising its “Net-Zero Framework” for shipping, despite broad earlier support. Trump's Administration "unequivocally rejects this proposal" & threatens sanctions & other retaliatory moves against countries backing the proposal. 😡

Researchers in China have developed a bamboo-based bioplastic which breaks down in soil in 50 days! It rivals (or surpasses!) standard plastic for mechanical strength & thermal stability. Thanks for bamboo's fast growth it's also genuinely scalable to replace fossil fuel plastic!

Iceland now has mosquitos.

Read that again.

Iceland's climate used to be inhospitable for the insect. But thanks to global warming as part of the climate crisis & increasing global transportation, that is no longer. Scientists now believe Antartica to be the only place on Earth without mosquitos.

The Pope has condemned climate deniers & calls for people to be active in political decisions for environmental protection. "God will ask us if we have cultivated and cared for the world that he created...for future generations...what will be our answer..." he asked. ❤️🌎

A recent analysis of climate reporting shows a glaring gap in talk of livestock & eating meat. Of 940 stories on climate change, only 36 (3.8%) mentioned animal ag or meat production. Food & ag contribute 1/3 of global GHG emissions so this omission in reporting is somewhat misleading.

Trump is all for freedom of speech...except in his Dept of Energy. A POTUS staffer has sent a long list of "words to avoid" to DoE employees, including: climate change; green; energy transition; sustainability; subsidies. The list goes on.

The next phase in creating his Dictatorship, complete. 😡

Fri-YAY Good News!

Using methane and steel slag, scientists have come up with a way to make cement with 80% less CO2e emissions than current production methods!

The cement industry is responsible for about 7.5% of global emissions, so this breakthrough could be hugely impactful!

Trump seems determined to sink the US economy. This time he's removing $13Bn is subsidies for green energy. That will hugely damage the sector.

And when this sector is seeing 3X the employment growth of any other industry in the US, this funding cut is *very* bad news for American families.

"Climate change: it's the greatest con job ever perpetrated on the world, in my opinion.".

Luckily, Donald Trump's opinion is worthless, being that he has no climate science credentials. 🤷 It makes it abundantly clear that he's unable to comprehend or deal with confronting or challenging ideas.

New research reveals that climate change is depriving the Arctic Ocean of vital nutrients, as its six largest rivers now deliver significantly less of the nitrogen essential for sustaining marine ecosystems — this threatens biodiversity & highlights the water quality impacts of global warming.

Warmer waters see more people infected by a flesh eating bacteria. 1 in 5 die.

This is playing out right now across the East Coast of America, esp, Florida, where rising ocean temperatures & increasing brackish water are perfect for this bacteria to incubate. 😨

Packaging, in all shapes & sizes, & for myriad of purposes, is unavoidable. So we need it to have minimal negative planetary impact.

Thankfully there are smart humans working on it! Seaweed, mushroom, algae & biochar are all being used in various forms, & with a great deal of success! We ❤️ this!

Butter made from carbon! You read that right!

Savour uses CO2 from air, H2 from water, then heats & oxidises them to create fat molecules akin to those in beef or cheese. The process emits zero GHGs & requires no farmland! What about the taste? It's recieved a resounding YES!
