Do you have a recommendation for foundations in the history of social democracy in America?

My background is centered in Christian ethics and values, particularly focused on treating others well even when its personally difficult, socially unpopular, or resistant to authority.

Related to my interest in Democratic Socialism: I've always been fascinated by political philosophy as a whole, but mostly in the more modern era beginning with the Russian revolution. What would I be missing if I started there?

Many of my friends and family have misconceptions about democratic socialism, so I'm pondering researching its American roots. Is that something you'd read?
