This modification had not been approved by the engineers and the welder was not qualified. Testing ensued. The bridge has held up over the years and is a beautiful structure, as shown in this photo

When that bridge was built, the contractor could not get the 4 beams to line up with the steel center connection so the connection was cut up, the beams inserted and the connection rewelded around the beams.
