The St. Croix Tribe of Ojibwe in northwestern Wisconsin are offering tribal members living in the Twin Cities 14 days of free hotel lodging on the reservation and other support as part of a temporary "Return Home" program.
DATE: January 15, 2026 TO: Tribal Membership FROM: Tribal Council RE: Temporary Lodging and Meals for Metro Area Tribal Members beginning 01/18/2026 Due to the ongoing enforcement actions and violent incidents involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the Minneapolis area, including multiple federal law enforcement shootings and heightened ICE operations that have caused serious community concern and instability, the St. Croix Tribal Council is offering a temporary safety and support program for its tribal members residing in the Twin Cities who wish to come home to northern Wisconsin. The St. Croix Tribal Council would like to immediately provide the following Return Home benefits: • Up to 14 days of lodging at no cost for enrolled tribal members and their families returning to our area from the Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan areas • One complimentary meal per person, per day during your stay • One free tribal ID per member from our Tribal Government Center We understand that recent events in Minneapolis - including ICE related shootings and the unlawful detention of indigenous relatives - have created anxiety and safety concerns for many tribal members residing in the Twin Cities area. Tribal Council is committed to supporting the well-being of their members. If you are interested in participating, please contact The Lodge Hotel in Danbury, Wisconsin, at 715-656-3444 ext. 2605 and let them know you will be participating in the Return Home Program beginning Sunday, 01/18/2026. I just remembered the time I went on a first date to London Zoo and at the gate he asked if I would mind paying for my own ticket, which I said I would, at which point he pulled out a 2-for-1 voucher, so I paid for my ticket and he went in for free.

New cell tower in Marine on St Croix visible from a long stretch of river. It's needed for the town and the banks are already lined by houses on that side, so I can't get super worked up. But it's another blemish. And certainly not great for the many birds that migrate up and down the river.

Re: The river crossing's criminal past.
“There was moon coming across from Somerset,” said Gilbert Walker, who operated the Marine ferry during the later years of Prohibition. “The ferry was a twenty-four hour deal,” he said and was based on the Minnesota side of the river. The road to the ferry from Wisconsin formed the border between St. Croix County and Polk County and was known locally as “County Line Road”. Many of the bootleggers hid the liquor under a load of wood in their pickup trucks. They crossed from Wisconsin. It was usually at night and Gilbert had his home at the landing. The bootleggers used a telephone system which had a crank that would ring a bell. This woke Gilbert and he slipped into coveralls and leather slippers and crossed over. The bootleggers always left a jug for Gilbert on the Wisconsin side. After they were across the river and safely on their way to the cities, Gilbert crossed back over and picked it up. At the land “there was always someone who wanted a drink now and then,” he said. “The Feds watched the boat like a hawk,” said Gilbert. Federal agents always betrayed themselves as “someone who was hanging around with an unfamiliar car.” The agents monitored the crossing from the old quarry above and behind the landing on the Minnesota side where Gilbert stored his canoes. From a cabin on the landing, Gilbert signaled with a light to the bootleggers whether it was safe to cross or not, “if the coast was clear or get the hell out,” said Gilbert. There was pride in Gilbert’s voice when he said, “They (the Feds) never did catch anyone there.”
