Like, yes, you can skip the mission briefing, but a first time player isn't going to do that. And it's roughly 25 minutes of cutscenes before the game really starts. That's a tall order for anyone not already invested in the MGS universe

Always found it interesting that the final boss is the conservatively dressed knight who's pious to a fault.
