Following this up, I’ve now listened to the three piano concertos by Krenek, and like them very much.

… doesn’t help. Like Haitink’s early 80s digital horror. I like the slow movement, though, which adopts Boult’s faster tempo (but why the portamento?). However, the Vivaldi style of violin playing in the last movement doesn’t work, and the first two movements remind one of Dinky toys.

Having now listened to the symphony:

I don’t appreciate Hurwitz’s dissing of the players. On the contrary, they play with an unconvincingly excess of precision. I can see why Wilson tries to be as different as possible from Previn et al, but it doesn’t work IMO. And the brittle recording quality…

When I shared the driving of a friend’s Triumph 2000, on a holiday in 1980, I was pretty shocked by its handling. By comparison with my dad’s Austin Maxi 1750, which was completely sure-footed, the Triumph steered like a river barge, and I was afraid it would come off the road.

And for the minority, of which I am one, the recollection of 1975, and the few years around then, was a country in morbid collapse, in which its own prime minister confessed that, were he younger, he would emigrate, and another retired saying “I wish I had been prime minister in happier times”.

Just a thought: perhaps equal credit can be given for podcast, society presentation, TV appearance, YouTube lecture, panel debate, as to monographs. It takes a lot of guts for an academic to put themselves ‘out there’ in those formats and risk being challenged, so they deserve credits accordingly.

Thanks. The Krenek is lovely.

This could have been really useful to me a couple of months ago!

I used to think these were ugly, particularly alongside the beautiful GS, DS, SM, CX. But I know appreciate their gawky looks.
