When I’m asked about the take away from my book, it’s that compassion, not empirically evidenced practices or one size fits all approaches, were what began the healing for us after war. Compassion and people acting with a a generosity of spirit.

Something I don’t talk about a lot is how my fight for care for my husband after war was really my journey from being a rule following white woman to learning to distrust authority and question the institutions who are supposed to take care of us.
