i want this so bad

Black Panther was always one of my favorites as a kid, and then rocketed on top with Priest’s Panther

I get that the MCU folks wanted to honor Boseman, but i hate that it robbed the movies of more T’Challa—especially since he seemed the natural center of the MCU post-Endgame

I have gone from being a "Wednesday Warrior" to buying trades/digital. I have gone from working in a comic shop to never setting foot in one. Gas is too damn expensive! And when those trades sales hit the cons or online shops? There's no comparison.

Everyone is making the most cautious financial decision for themselves. I don't have ideas for making a new crop of Wednesday Warriors, but I do have ideas for making more of me. Ideas on how to get Marvel fans who do not give a **** about comics to buy trades.

A diverse and wealthy clientele will be found in cities, not a segregated suburb. But guess where retail space is dirt cheap? That suburb! And retailers rightfully select spaces they can afford. That's not a racist decision. It's a responsible one!

But that decision changes the foot traffic.

I hate to say that I've given up on retailers. But the reality is that many non-black retailers have given up on us. There are those who have swallowed the racist social media swill, but there are those who would LOVE a larger and more diverse readership but are faced with some painful realities.

But it has been happening to us for a very long time. And social media and "culture warriors" for profit have made it SO much worse. www.youtube.com/watch?v=u16s...

And non-black creators and male creators and cishet creators pretend it's not happening! Because it's not happening to THEM.

There is a social media cottage industry built around anti-diversity campaigns. Attacking black creators. Attacking black characters. Making money through disincentivizing retailers to pick up black-helmed projects. Regardless of quality! I'm tired of pretending these are valid "critiques."

But this is about T'Challa, not Peter. Why? Because everyone else is too damn cowardly to talk about antiblackness in the industry except me. And someone HAS to be willing to talk about it to fix these sales.

We have the perfect set up in both live-action and comics and I sure hope Marvel doesn't waste it. I'd hate to think 616 T'Challa has been on ice for nothing--because Farid and I are RIGHT HERE AND AVAILABLE FOR WORK, thank you very much.

For many people, the "real" Marvel is the Marvel that takes place on their screens. Yes, even though the comics came first. Yes, even though the comics are stellar. Live-action is their canon. So, how do you make the comics canon to those viewers? Put 616 characters in live-action projects.

And the reason I stress that 616 T'Challa should be included is because I, unlike every racist YouTube grifter who denigrates black writers at DC and Marvel for ad profit, actually would like to drive film/TV cape fans of T'Challa into making comic purchases.

I don't want to see Toussaint (T'Challa Jr.). I don't want to see Ultimate T'Challa. I don't want to see Star Lord T'Challa. 616. That's it. I will even accept Denzel as a 616 T'Challa from the far-flung future. I am very particular. Sorry.

I'm going to jump into the Black Panther discourse ONCE and then I'm staying out of it:

If Black Panther appears in the MCU prior to a reboot of the live-action universe, it should star 616 T'Challa. Thank you for coming to my TEDTalk.

All my fellow comic folk, please follow Farid for pretty pictures of Avengers and to convince him that Bluesky is better for comics!
I'm here. I'm kind of pissed that I have to be on social media to promote my work... but that's part of being an artist, I guess.

This picture of Kang from Avengers #24 (which comes out this month, on the 19th) is me looking at yet another account.

I also think that DC might be able to get John Stewart in that position too. And they'll have McDuffie to thank for that. And they almost fumbled tf out of that gift of McDuffie laying that foundation in animation with that awful Hal Jordan GL live-action movie.

You will never win in regards to adult black characters if you are too afraid to let a black person in real life take the reins.

Marvel should thank God for Chadwick Boseman every day, because he absolutely got Black Panther to cross over. And now I think that T'Challa might be permanently A-list in the public sphere. (Fingers crossed.)

Viable black heroes need more than a costume and a name. They need a mythology. They need an independent history and origin. And popular black heroes need consistent time and attention. The minute you bench them, you will lose your progress. It's like putting a plant in a room without windows.

Why did it take ME going in and building out Wakanda's mythology by pulling in gods from Egypt and Benin and Nigeria and digging through Marvel's completely abandoned crate of African gods to make it all make sense? Bud, Black Panther is your A-LIST black character! A ROOT! A Thor. A Batman.

Here's the bad news. I don't think Marvel understands the gift it was given and letting it languish is going to cause problems. And you know what, I'm going to appreciate myself in this moment because no one else will!

Why did it take until 2024 for the five tribes of Wakanda to be fleshed out?
