My experience is the nickname comes spontaneously, usually when the dog is doing something engaging or enraging. My Rex (male) somehow became Rexanne, sung to the tune of Roxanne.

We don't mention Dodge, our third greyhound, as often as our others because he was with us only four months. This Google Photo Create conversion of a photo to video brings his sweet face back to life. He was a 12-year-old return who joined us for his final days. Such a good boy. ❤️

We're having our first greyhound-free Thanksgiving since 2008. Missing them terribly even though they were pains in the asses when holiday meals were being served. ☺️
