I just tested it with a new account -- no subscription or connection to any campaigns. It let me build a custom race and spell and add it to a new character sheet without any issue (beyond having to make the character After the race). Only thing I could think of is if the weapon wasnt in your -

I'm not familiar with totally free online tools, beyond filling out a blank sheet. What you can do though is make "custom" races and feats in dndbeyond that are free for you to use. Just enable homebrew content on your character sheet to apply it!
