Paying the bills as a Graphic Designer in Dirt Racing

Posting in hopes that the inside thoughts are more common than I think
I don't just want to bury this year, I want to encase it in iron, steel, and concrete. Can't risk it trying to cast some 20th level necromancy spell on all the various demons lurking around what feels like every corner.

One thing is consistent in Star Wars: if there’s an on-screen R-rated death, it’s happening to a droid. On-screen physical torture for a “kids show” so long as it’s electrocuting a droid. Pulled all their limbs off? That’s cool so long as it’s a droid.

Watching Clone Wars has so many moments of VA recognition. “That’s the voice of Iroh!” Or “wait, is that Seth Green?” Yep.

V for Vendetta hits so different in 2025. When it came out, it seemed nigh impossible for there to be a fascist takeover of a democracy.

Now it hits harder than ever, if only because the gap between worlds is so much smaller.

Sometimes, I imagine being an in-house designer is like being a cook at an odd burger joint.

70% of orders are burgers and fries with a few changes in condiments.
20% is random busloads of people wanting their food at the same time.
8% is asking for sushi
2% is mad their sushi doesn't have ketchup

Two weeks ago we lost a giant of the movie posters world, Renato Casaro. Today we lost a modern Master of movie posters: DREW STRUZAN. I can guarantee you have at least seen 5 of his posters in your lifetime. The man has put his art on some of the most popular movie franchises (Indiana Jones, 1/4

Adobe programs should never crash.

"But there's no way they can-"

Don't even. They have the resources and power, they just choose to use it to make exploitative AI instead of stability.

Took 18 years for the tours and money to line up for me, but I FINALLY got to see NIN on stage tonight!

18 years of hype and NIN more than delivered!

SO GOOD

Oh look – it's 1:30AM and a fun dance bassline popped in my head.

I'm sure I'll exercise plenty of self control and get the basic idea out in a timely manner in order to get enough sleep

How does someone get into drawing characters for a living and never get curious about hair?

Especially white guys between 25-45. You watched The Matrix Reloaded and didn't ONCE think how cool Niobe's hair looked? And why she'd have that style in the Matrix but not when in Zion?

We can do better.

Requesting a logo be placed front and center of a design isn't exactly a "fix" it's a "change".

"Fix" implies something is broken. The design isn't broken, it just happens to have one singular iota of nuance.

5 years. That's the difference between the inked drawing and the other three.

The pencil sketches took 5-15 minutes, done a few days ago. The inked one took me 2+ hours back in 2020.

I'm 34. It's hard to break out of stagnation, but worth it.

Finally have an example where skill won over "convenience"

The first image is in part of a client's logo. They want it on the side of a truck. I check stock sites and Google. Nada.

AutoTrace & AI upscale look awful. So many artifacts, not enough clean lines.

Listening to incomplete tracks I made 5-15 years ago feels like scrolling through someone’s curated socials, except it’s all me.

“Whoa, that sounded pretty good. Be his life is pretty good”

Dude, that song was the one time you were happy for a month. Don’t oversell it.

One of the joys of birding is knowing fledglings are doing good based on what your ears tell you.

I know the Cardinals, Wrens, and Blue Jays all had successful broods because I can hear them.

Designing for events can make interesting tensions.

Vehicle/Camping Passes are fun to make, so the designs tend to be good.

The spec requires creative freedom – be hard to forge, and unlike previous years.

I get excited when they're done.
But I can't post a picture for 6 months, because forgery.

Starting some IFS work and it's WILD.

I knew there'd be some interesting stuff, but I have TWO shapeshifters protecting my 13 year old self. One is a femme fatale and the other is essentially a rough sketch until he starts talking like Bill Burr.

If nothing else, IFS gets the imagination PRIMED.

The "christian" right will try to silence anything opposing their viewpoints. Not just nudity, but any dissenting thought.

Ask any ex-christian about how outside viewpoints were treated. PluggedIn magazine was the 90's guide to teen censorship for evangelical households.

Control is their goal.
This is always where it was going to go.

They want control over how human bodies are allowed to be portrayed, not just nudity but in all aspects.

Bluster about "protecting children" from pornography is just the wedge they use to open the door.
The Federalist is coming for your artistic nudes. By which I mean the ones in museums.

"A number of Christian men I’ve known have expressed discomfort at viewing nudity in high art... these are honest men who care about honoring God and womanhood.

The Fragile is a perfect "I'm working through something right now" album.

Love it when a masterpiece can be cathartic.

Future goal: Become more unhinged

Seems like the people who get positive comments about being unhinged have something figured out.

AI Art is the new Clip Art

It’s there for people who wouldn’t pay for a graphic anyway. In a few years, the average Joe will know it for what it is immediately.

Venting:

Want your graphic fast?
Give designers ALL of the necessary information.

"A 9x16 showing __ in the venue".
Orientation? Showing the logo? The product?

Take 10 seconds of your oh-so-important day and give your request some thought. Save us all a bunch of time and revisions.
