The Four-Story Mistake, by Elizabeth Enright. I was very upset when I left elementary school for junior high and lost access to it at the school library. (Eventually it came back into print.) Still love it and the whole Melendy series.

It's so good and I was very happy to see it win! Ever since Arlene Sardine I have been interested in books about animals and death that take a different, non-pet and non-anthropomorphized view.
