2/2 On the west coast of #Easdale complex multiple dykes intrude into the #slate country rock, and into each other! #xenoliths highlight the #dykes being younger than the slates #lawofincludedfragments

1/2 Some more lovely #igneous #geology this time on Easdale, home of the World Stone Skimming Championships. Although famed for its #slate the upstanding spine of the island is dominated by resistant igneous #dykes , one of which is exposed in 3D with associated spheroidal weathering

Some more wonderful #geology on the island of Kerrera, this time featuring sedimentary rocks! Much of S and W of island is covered by Devonian conglomerates, much more extensively than I have seen on Arran. These formed from desert debris flows when this area was south of Equator 400ma!

#geology #dykes And the Slate Islands dyke-fest also continues with a spectacular set of multiple dykes on the west coast of Seil.

#geology #slate #easdale More of the slate-fest from Scottish ‘Slate Islands’, Seil and Easdale. These shots highlight the extent of former workings, which were surprisingly deep and abandoned after sea broke through defences in C19. Shipped all over the world!

#geology #igneous It looks like a wall and it functions as a wall - but I is another one of the spectacular Paleogene dykes on the island of Seil in Scotland. This one can be traced from the cliff (behind photo) and out to sea across the raised beach

3/3 Located close to Mull, there are also some spectacular mafic dykes, intruded into the older metamorphic rocks. Enclave or xenolith?
April 6, 2025 at 2:44 PM
2/3 These rocks were metamorphosed (low grade regional) hundreds of millions of years ago, with further cleavage caused by subsequent continental collisions.

1/3 Since leaving Twitter my #geology posts have been few, but Scotland’s ‘Slate Islands’ encourage some action. On Seil, the widespread Dalradian slates are everywhere, with remnants of slate quarrying industry. Just look at these pyrite porphyroblasts and cleavage!

First kalettes - a cross between kale and sprouts - of the season for me. Delicious, and from Lincolnshire (my birth county)!
