you're right that there was no intentional policy of reducing the population of ukraine; but there were reams of policies callously exacerbating the situation, to a level far outweighing the mere chaos of seasonal yields.

there's a definitional spectrum that can include or exclude the soviet famine, the irish famine, the bengal famine, and others. "intent" can be complicated by neglect and paternalism.

We don't have to appeal to religiosity any more than we have to appeal to liberalism, racism, or whatever else. On the contrary the task is to maintain the correct line against it, regardless of whether it's polling as popular in a given time or place.
