@jon white space and wildly different font sizes?
A6 index card mock up of a cross border rail article. Title reads "Cross border rail" and includes a drawing of train tracks and the French and German flags.
Below that in large green letters are "the good", followed by in light green "there are tracks!"
At the bottom there is in small red text "the bad" with simulated squiggly text in red below that.

Sometimes videos games create too much fantasy, such as Train Sim World letting me drive a German train just not on time, but early.

#trains
Screenshot of Train Sim World from the drivers seat of an ICE 3. On screen is the time table, where I arrived more than 2 minutes early to Fulda, and 3 minutes early to Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe. Screenshot of the game Train Sim World of the ICE3-RBW, the rainbow ICE, with a dual level red DB train in the background.

A cartoon from my new book, 'Physics for Cats'. Out next week: www.tomgauld.com
A scientist stands in front of an enormous contraption
"I created this device to test my theory that our entire reality is a simulation, but the readings I'm
getting suggest something much worse"

 "What?" Asks a second scientist.
"We're living in a cartoon!" Says the first.
"Does it at least have a good punchline?" says the second.
The fiorst scientist carefully looks over the data, then eventually replies "Nope"

Does anyone know why there is no more $5 for 5sqkm Planet imagery on Skyfi anymore?

Not usually at Utrecht Centraal this late, so stopped to take photos of the Nightjet to Zürich and Basel.

Why is the train so empty? Is it normal for less than a quarter of the train to be filled at this point?
I've been interested in booking but it has always been so expensive and sold out […]

My latest cartoon for @newscientist.com

p.s. my new book of science cartoons 'Physics for Cats' is out now. Visit www.tomgauld.com for details
A group of scientists huddle excitedly around a monitor. One says:
"The program has detected a signal sent from another galaxy, but we need to upgrade to a paid version before we can reply."

The screen reads "Choose a plan To unlock replies: 1. Student 2. Basic 3. Pro 4. Expert "

Sometimes I get silly ideas, and bring them half to life in Blender

For context, the name of the roman borders (at least in the Netherlands) are Limes.

#blender
3D render of a Pepsi can reading "BIGGUS DICKUS" reference to a good friend of Caesar, the Pepsi logo I didnt make big enough compared to the source material, below that "ZERO BARBARIANS" and "LIMES FLAVOR".

Copy pasta simple ice cubes surround the can. Real photo of a Lime flavored Zero Sugar Pepsi can, reading "MAXIMUM TASTE" at the top. There are green lime drawings.

I seem to remember there was a library for parsing urls and query parameters better than the built in urllib, but I can't seem to find it, does anyone know what I'm referring to?

I just keep getting results for how to use urllib

#TIL that #LibreOffice has a command line tool to convert files from, say, .docx format to .pdf format. HUGE time saver when a client sends a bunch of .docx files and says they're sending pdfs!

libreoffice --headless --convert-to pdf *.docx

The blades of the windmill in Nispen (NL) are made from the ICE 3 trains that failed in their cross border service between Germany and the Netherlands.

#badrailwayhistory #trains
Lovely Dutch windmill made of brick, the windows and doors frames are painted green. The windmill blades are mostly white with a red stripe running from the outer end to the center axis

Does @geomob accept "shitposty" talks? Because I have an idea for a talk that builds on this gif that I could finish before the next NL meetup on 18 September.

It would involve FastAPI, PIL, maybe ImageMagick, and ffmpeg.

My gym has some very light reading material, a book on tax law or just a translation dictionary with Dutch and French.
On the left , a book on tax collection law by Loyens & Loeff

On the right a Dutch French-Dutch dictionary

@eesger At FOSS4GNL we were talking about Panoramax, I noticed an open dataset from the RDW with the verkeersborden, and there are image files linked. Perhaps these images could be used to train a NL Panoramax verkeersborden YOLO classifier.

Anyone have information on this SNG 3002 and the digital tech testing they're doing?
#trains #ns
Nederlandse Spoorwegen Sprinter Next Generation (SNG) train with a nose cutout with a security camera and some sort of sensor above the camera. Nederlandse Spoorwegen SNG train with a sign saying "hier testen wij niuewe digital technologie", in English meaning "we are testing new digital technology here". In the windows is a giant checkerboard poster.

I'm going to Enschede today, and I'm tempted to get the German train to visit de Eschmarke station to say I've been there.
