Honestly the random passive multiplayer aspects like vagrants, miracle resonance (in theory anyway), cursed statues, bonus estus from kindling, and bell ringing is part of why i love ds1 so much and wish they kept weird online shit and didnt drop basically all of it but summons and messages

Me too lol tho i havent played Etrian Odyssey. The only mainline games that are directly connected are SMT 1, 2, if... (thats the name) and NINE (not actually the ninth dont ask). Theres some easter eggs and such that can tie other games to those but its nothing story related

Id agree, theres a ton of little nods to all sorts of stuff all throughout. Also for the record, most smt games arent connected to each other and are a standalone thing so you dont need to worry about continuity if thats what your worried about. Lots of people reccomend 3 as a starting point
