Gonna dissent a bit here. The real problem wasn't the move to FM, but that small kids had the money to buy albums instead of singles, and warped the music market toward the tastes of 14 yr olds with more money than taste. The 45s market used to solve that.
The collapse of AM radio is one of the reasons we are in the mess we're in.
