There is a story about a man who, having completed some great work worthy of an equally great reward, stood before the king and brought out a chessboard. He said he would like to be rewarded with a portion of rice for every square on the board, starting with a single grain on the first square, and doubling on every square thereafter. The king agreed, and ordered his servants to begin bringing in the rice. One grain on the first square. Two on the second. Then four, and so on... The rice quickly began to pile up until it overflowed the throne room. The king's advisors informed him that the number of rice owed would soon surpass all the rice in the kingdom, and by the end, the rice production of the entire world. It's my theory that a curse was laid on this man and his descendants, and that he is the distant ancestor of one or both of the devs, who are doomed to add another branching path to this narrative for every grain of rice. This game is the work of madmen. The scope and ambition of creating a branching narrative this nuanced and intricate is an act of hubris that in the old days would get you turned into a spider. It is a labyrinth of unnumbered horrors and also cute geriatric pugs. It has some of the most impressive mechanics I've seen in this medium and they are for the most part not even visible to the player. Play this game, if only to bear witness.
