Wine & Cats with a touch of nonsense
Lonely Planet called our boutique store, La Cava del Barrio, the best wine shop in Santiago (Chile)
Someone (maybe Kent?) recommended this so I gave it a try and I quite liked it. It’s been on the Master List for some time, possibly since the it’s first publication.

Ah, wow, will do, since I'm already impressed!

This is the only of the suggestions that I've listened to (I found it thru the random number generator). Um, not my bag, but who knows? Maybe it will find new fans. Tho maybe it is? The day I listened to it, Spotify was showing that DanFam only had 87 (not a typo) listeners but now I see 3.815!

With a 21st century classic (Daft Punk's DISCOVERY) & a lesser disc by a well known group (Air with 10.000 HZ LEGEND), I suspect that Télépopmusik's GENETIC WORLD will get lost in the shuffle. I mean, *3* French electropop albums for the tourney?

But I love this

I listened to Tim Hecker for 1st time last night and felt I wasn't in the right head space to appreciate it. So this morning I tried again. I'm putting it in the "Toss-Up" column for now; there were things I really liked about it, but I had to skip some tracks (too distracting).

Of course I thought that the central conceit of Gorillaz was intriguing when the disc came out, but I never took to it. When I started '01 tourney prep, their debut was one of the 1st I listened to. Maybe I'd appreciate it now? Nope. I only like 1 song. But I know it'll get a high seed.

Well I personally *do* prefer Blur to Gorillaz so I guess I am one of those folks! Lord knows that the Electorate made several choice that baffled me in the '89 Tourney, but Gorillaz beating out YHF in a Best Album competition would blow my mind. Well, 1st we need to see if YHF ends up in '01!

And if you like that, check out Femi Kuti's FIGHT TO WIN for nomination, too.

Femi is channeling his father, Fela, who died in 1997; the songs "Wonder Wonder" and "Traitors of Africa" even lift specific riffs from Fela hits, but the disc comes across mostly as a homage instead of a retread IMO.

I had never heard of The Coup until @renamj.bsky.social recommended PARTY MUSIC as part of Tourney prep, so the lore behind the cover was also unknown to me. It's absolutely wild how unintentionally prescient it was.

But PARTY MUSIC is great, it will definitely get a nomination vote from me.

No there isn’t. Charlie Brown is the Number One Seed in all Christmas music rankings.

I'm only 4 tracks in and this is right up my alley, Rena. I do indeed love this type of music. Nice recommendation!

(A pretty deep cut, too: as of this morning, Tipsy only has 2.684 monthly listeners).

Let me guess... you're a fan of the Cerebro podcast?

I found this article by Mitchum in Esquire in which he talks about what he calls his "very minor claim to fame".

I Introduced the Term 'Dad-Rock' to the World. I Have Regrets.
A dozen years ago the author unleashed the "dad" modifier, and the world hasn't been the same since. Neither is he.

I don’t want to listen to 2 min of distortion to start off an album! But then I like the rest of We Invent You. Then whenever I think maybe I’m finally getting into it they just start screaming in the middle of a song (like Scarlette) and ugh.

But I’m trying Ringo. I’m trying real hard.

I am not a metal fan at all & only listened to Tool and Opeth as part of Tourney prep but I’m going to vote for them.

The Unwound. This disk and Nick Cave are the two albums in prep that I’ve listened to the most *trying* to figure them out, *trying* to like them and I just can’t get there. 1/2

5 stars is ridiculous and IIRC Rolling Stone had it as best of the year which is also ridiculous but you know? I listened to it as part of Tourney prep and it’s a pretty good album.
December 8, 2025 at 3:49 AM
I do quite like that album. It’s lots of fun and I’ll vote for it for inclusion in the tourney. But … good enough to take down Wilco?

I mean, I don't have a crystal ball, but I can't imagine any scenario where Gorillaz or Death Cab beats YHF.
December 7, 2025 at 9:45 PM
I love your descriptrion ("exotica/lounge") so I will put this on my list.
December 7, 2025 at 6:18 PM
No pressure, guys, this vote only might be the most important for the enitre '01 Tourney!

(Yes, I am making the assumption that YHF will be seeded 1 or 2 in whatever year it ends up in.)

Glad to hear that I've got company!

(I got a "video unavailable" notice with that, but I'll look for it elsewhere, as I'm not sure I've heard that one)

Here's one that could have been in the '89 Tourney, but you can find versions from '86!

I am NOT an expert on Eels (I've only listened to the album here on the '01 Master List) but I did find it on a "Best of 2001 list" somewhere, for what it's worth.
