They killed a woman in the morning. In the afternoon they grabbed people as school got out. All in my south Minneapolis community. My kids are home because school was cancelled. They've painted Minneapolis as some sort of urban hell. It's quite the opposite, actually. They brought the terror here.

I don't know when the EVH tribute show will happen. I want it to happen. The amount of work between now and then seems overwhelming. I'll need to enlist a co-organizer. In the meantime, it's been fun to learn new VH songs. I taught myself this deep cut last night. #EVHTributeShow

My 1992 Ensoniq SD-1 synth has been yelling at me about needing a new battery for years. (Its only function now is as a backup practice keyboard for the kids.) The modern battery is much smaller, so I extended its legs, soldered the two points, and secured it with gaffing tape. Hack? It works.

My dinner date turned 12 today. She had a zoo outing with her mom earlier and a special dinner gathering with friends last night. She spent the time in between doing some of her favorite things: writing, playing games, and opening presents. The smiles have been big.

Here's the last photo of Nell as an 11-year-old. Tomorrow she is 12. Middle school. Lots of changes. I couldn't be more proud. Every night since she was little Nell and I have had a "com." (Way back she thought the word was "comversation," and the term has stuck). 1/2

I was SO happy to have FIVE new kids sign up for guitar lessons this summer/fall. They've all been really wonderful to work with. Audrey, a fourth grader, included this message with a card and gift today. She's as kind and thoughtful as this note suggests. Sharing so we can all feel the positivity.

Today I learned of the death of a former student, Ben Villano. At one time or another I taught guitar lessons to Ben, his wife, and his brother, and I also got to know his parents. They are GOOD PEOPLE, and I am devastated and heartbroken for them.
I just mowed my lawn on November 16th. In fact, a November mow--or two--is now commonplace. They say Minnesota is one of the fastest warming states. I believe them.

Rhys (7.5 y.o.) went from knowing nothing at the beginning of the baseball season to knowing every player on the Twins AND both World Series teams, AND he knows a lot of the rules of the game. Dude is now by baseball buddy.
